Our work with the research community

Hydrology, urban hydraulics and river hydraulics are all fields in which Safege has research partnership agreements with INSA Lyon, the prestigious multidisciplinary international engineering university and one of France's biggest research centres, with 29 laboratories employing over 1,000 researchers, research fellows/lecturers and technicians.

In January 2006 made a three-year commitment under the CIFRE programme (funding mechanism through which young researchers are employed by a company and obtain a doctorate in partnership with an external research lab), supporting a thesis on the subject of "modelling of wet-weather in-sewer processes". This research should make a significant contribution to the development of new tools to quantify pollutant discharges and determine their impact on the receiving bodies.

The modelling of infiltration and drying processes is the theme of a current Safege collaboration with the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (LCPC), with the aim of comparing LCPC prototype software with MOUSE hydrology models using data derived from experimental river basins.

Journées doctorales en hydrologie urbaine (JDHU)

With the participation of the "Urban Hydraulics" task force of the Société Hydrotechnique de France (SHF) and ASTEE's "Stormwater" task force, the second JDHU (French doctoral students workshops on Urban Hydrology) were held at the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (LCPC) in Nantes, on 17 and 18 October 2006. A second-time sponsor of the event, Safege sat on the scientific committee and awarded prizes for the best presentations.

The workshops covered a broad spectrum of urban hydrology topics, including 2D and 3D modelling, sediment fall velocities, impact of urban wet-weather flows, variability of pollution, treatment systems and infiltration systems.

The workshops are an opportunity for doctoral students :

  • to present their work,
  • gain practice in moderating scientific presentation sessions,
  • to get to know each other and the French community of researchers and practitioners in the area of urban hydrology.

The best articles are published in La Houille Blanche (journal of the SHF) and TSM (journal of ASTEE).

NOVATECH

Safege is a regular contributor at Novatech, one of the main international conferences on urban water management. Held once every three years in Lyon since 1992, Novatech is organised jointly by INSA Lyon, ASTEE and the French water agencies.

The sixth Novatech conference held in June 2007 drew nearly 600 participants from around the world, with equal representation of the scientific community, local government and businesses.
