Featured projects in Algeria

Recent Safege undertakings in Algeria have included studies with a development orientation, including a seawater desalination study covering the country's entire coastline and a feasibility study regarding the transfer of water from the northern Sahara to the north of the country.

Currently, Safege is carrying out an assessment and rehabilitation study for the water supply systems of the cities of Batna, Setif, El Oued, Blida and Djelfa, a sewer system evaluation survey for the city of Oran, and design and construction supervision assignments for sewerage facilities (sewers, force mains and treatment plants) in Oran, Mila and Ouargla and water infrastructure (transmission mains and transfer systems) in Chelghoum Laid (Beni Haroun).

In 2005, Safege was retained by the Algérienne des Eaux to carry out an assessment and rehabilitation study of the water supply systems of the cities of Setif, Batna and El Oued. The three-year service contract was financed by the Algerian government. At its height, the Safege project team comprised 20 persons, operating in the three cities. For the purpose of the study, six main tasks were performed: automated mapping of the distribution networks, assessment of the production and treatment facilities, development of a network model and a costed, prioritised master plan for the rehabilitation of the facilities, assistance to the operator for the commercial and operational management of the service with training modules for employees, and a works component implemented throughout the duration of the study for the installation of valves and meters… the aim being to complete the calibration of the model and commence the programme to improve the operation of the systems.

In 2005, Safege was awarded the construction supervision contract for an ambitious sewerage and drainage programme for the Ouargla Valley in the central southern part of the country.
Over a period of 60 months, a 22-strong Safege team is supervising the €160 million package of works financed by the Algerian government as a component of the Presidential Programme. The project includes the construction of :

  • 69 km of gravity sewers (diameter 300 to 1100 mm), 26km of force mains (diameter 300 to 700mm), 14 pumping stations (capacity 25 to 780 l/s) and 8 lift stations (capacity 20 to 200 l/s),
  • a 250,000 PE aerated lagoon treatment plant (25,400 m2 of basins),
  • a 40km-long twin wall concrete discharge channel (30km concrete section and 10km GRP section below the water table),
  • a 10,000 PE aerated lagoon plant and 8,000 PE constructed wetland plant,
  • a groundwater drainage system circling the city and comprising 54 km of trenches, 6km of rising mains and 10 pumping stations (15 to 85 l/s).

SUPERVISION OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONVEYANCE SYSTEM SUPPLYING THE CITIES OF MILA AND CONSTANTINE FROM THE BENI HAROUN TRANSFER SYSTEM

In 2005, Safege was selected to supervise the construction of part of the conveyance system supplying the cities of Constantine and Mila from the Beni Haroun transfer system (fed by the dam of the same name). Under the 25-month contract financed by the Algerian government, a 17-strong Safege team will supervise €20 million-worth of works up to the commissioning and handover stage :

  • 66 km of ductile iron pipe of 300mm to 1 200 mm in diameter,
  • five terminal reservoirs of capacity 5,000 m3, 2,000 m3 and 1,000 m3,
  • three pumping stations of capacity 500 l/s and 250 l/s,
  • two pressure-regulating tanks.
